Best option available at my location

Mike Van Meeteren on September 26, 2018

My only other "broadband" coverage option aside from satellite or cellular in my area is DSL. Rural DSL is not a reliable option, my specific address is connected to a DSLAM that hosts 50 other houses and is serviced by a 9 Mbps backhaul. Between 5-10PM, speeds are worse than dial-up. When I first researched Broadband, I was so excited. Here was an option similarly price but with speeds up to 80 mbit/sec!! (Lightning plan). Well, unfortunately, tall trees killed that dream. I settled for DSL. Fought that for a year, and finally decided to add a radio tower to my property to be able to get the Broadband signal. Now I have a line of sight to the Howard Lake water tower. Unfortunately, the equipment on that tower is not the newest stuff, so I'm technology limited at 10 down 1 up. But, it is ALWAYS that speed. It doesn't slow down in the evenings like other services. I have a tracking app that tracks my internet link uptime. I've had the service a little over a year, and the TOTAL downtime is 18 hours, and most of that was a single 12-hour incident where someone had killed the power at the water tower site. That's over 99.5%. Good enough for me. Most outages other than that are 5-10 minutes long. Price is higher than an urban cable or fiber connection, which is why I rate the value at 3 stars instead of 5, but for what you're getting and especially where you're getting it, you won't find better. Just remember, you need a line of sight (or VERY close to it) to their broadcast sites. Elevation is key.
