Internet Access in Virginia Beach Virginia

The average household in Virginia Beach is serviceable by 3-4 Internet Service Providers, or "ISPs." This is actually a strong amount of competition compared to other cities. Competition is correlated with more affordable pricing.

Coverage from the most common companies, Viasat Internet (formerly Exede) and HughesNet, in general, will overlap. As you might expect, the choice between Viasat and HughesNet is common.

The takeaway here is that Virginia Beach's broadband infrastructure follows a common pattern in US cities and towns: wide availability of bundled cable and DSL, but only two choices since most residences are stuck with a single option for either type of service. The cable/DSL pattern has a simple reason. Internet providers started as TV and phone corporations. So, they already own these pre-existing copper networks to deliver broadband services. Fiber is growing as an alternative. While not all "Fiber" plans are 100% "Fiber to the Home" connections, 67.64 percent of the population has access to fiber Internet stretching at least to a box near the property line.

Data from our market research team suggests that common ISPs in the area place some sort of limit on data use on residential Internet plans. Data caps are a public issue because subscribers view them as a tactic to stop streaming services, while providers insist caps are a necessary strategy for managing network traffic. In either case, the culprit is video streaming, which easily uses one to seven Gigabytes per hour.

Customer Reviews of Internet Providers in Virginia Beach

Poor Speed, difficult to get help

Internet speed is not consistent. Most of the time the connection is minimal at best. Once in a while, the speed works as promised. This is all prior to when the high-speed data plan is exhausted. Once the data runs out, the connection is near impossible. I have spent way too much time trying to get through their customer service by phone and via text. The bills keep coming but not the service we are paying for. If you have another provider, check them out before going with HughesNet.

Henry in promotions department was helpful

Called in because of a promotion offered. When I had switched services, I was told email had been sent multiple times but I had never received it. Turns out email was wrong in the system. I was then told that my offer had expired and I am no longer eligible for my free chrome book. Obviously, I was very upset seeing as that was the main reason I switched providers. After talking more and being transferred between departments, I finally asked to speak with a manager of some kind. When Henry took my call, he very calmly explained to me the reason I would not be able to get a chrome book was because they aren’t partnered with Samsung anymore and the best he could do from his department was to offer me a Visa gift card for $200. While worth nowhere near the same amount, it is still much better than nothing and what I appreciated even more was his relaxed tone even though I was not relaxed. Thank you for your help, Henry.

Speed not limited by other customer usage.

I like Verizon primarily because you do not have to share the same line with other neighbors. You have one set speed. Wired providers offer a fast speed, but if everyone is watching at the same time your speed goes down proportionally.
