Weaknesses of VyprVPN VPN
- VyprVPN does not allow for a truly unlimited number of devices
- VyprVPN has significantly less number of servers than some other major VPNs
VyperVPN is one of the best VPNs on the market today and can easily be compared side by side with market leaders, such as NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Chameleon protocol — VyprVPN’s proprietary security protocol with built-in cloaking — is especially interesting. VyprVPN doesn’t play around when it comes to security; with ground-breaking new protocols, such as Chameleon and WireGuard, it offers users more than just the industry gold-standard OpenVPN protocol.
While it offers industry-leading security, VyprVPN is far from expensive. With VyprVPN, you can unblock most geo-blocked content streaming services in privacy for under $2.00 a month — I call that a win.
VyprVPN’s Essential Features
Modern VPN users come to expect some essential features from VPNs today, and if they don’t have them, then they’re just not worth your time or attention. Thankfully, VyprVPN has been thoroughly tested and examined, and it has not been found lacking.
As already mentioned, VyprVPN has a number of state-of-the-art security protocols to choose from. Beyond that, you can easily choose from 70-plus locations and countless configuration options. The ease of configuration is also surprising. While some highly-configurable VPNs can be attractive or confusing, VyprVPN has made the process as simple and easy as can be.
No-log policies are also an industry standard when it comes to VPNs today. While many VPNs located in places like the United Kingdom and the United States claim to not log your data, they do — and governments can essentially force those VPN companies to release your data to them when requested. On the other hand, VyprVPN is located outside of international surveillance alliances and is not legally required to track your data or report it to the government.
VyprVPN is available to the public at extremely reasonable prices. When compared to another leading VPN, NordVPN, VyprVPN prices come in at about half.
VyprVPN offers three pricing tiers that gradually go up in term length and down in monthly cost. While the two-month plan is already a good price when compared to other leading VPNs, the 36-month plan monthly price is near-unbeatable.
|Plan length||2-month plan||18-month plan||36-month plan|
Of course, price isn’t the only factor when choosing a VPN. What good would a low price do you if your information was left unsecured or the app was unusable?
VyprVPN’s Encryption Protocols
VyprVPN uses a number of highly secure and fast security protocols. Choose from the list of available protocols to suit your specific VPN needs:
When you start with the Windows app, your VPN will automatically be preset to WireGuard, which they describe as the “most advanced” protocol that is the “future-of-all protocols.” It’s extremely fast and secure and ensures a speedy connection.
As mentioned, though, VyprVPN has its own proprietary protocol, Chameleon, that is specifically designed with bypassing geo-blocks in mind. It can even be used to bypass governmental blocks from mainland China and has built-in cloaking capabilities. Needless to say, if you want to be invisible online to governments, corporations, and ISPs, Chameleon is the way to go.
Of course, VyprVPN also offers industry standards IKEv2 and OpenVPN security protocols which have been proven to be reliable and secure.
VyprVPN’s User Experience
Logging into VyprVPN can be difficult if you have a slow internet connection. The VyprVPN website admits that if you have connectivity issues, the app might not recognize your login credentials even if the main website accepts them. This was tested with a slow connection of 2 Mbps and the app only let me log in after about 15 minutes of trying.
However, once you’re in (which shouldn’t be a problem if you have a modern internet connection), the user experience is seamless, attractive, and easy. Quickly connect to the VPN by simply hitting the “connect” button on the main screen.
Connecting to servers in different locations is also an easy process where you get some additional help choosing your desired location. Of course, you can just choose the “fastest server” option. However, if you want to scroll through the destinations to make your own choice, especially if you want to unlock specific geo-blocked content, you will be presented with not only a list of locations like most VPNs do, but also their relative latency.
If you want to customize your VPN experience, it’s as simple as going to the “customize” tab on the bottom and flipping a switch or two. For instance, you can flip the kill switch, automatic reconnect, and public Wi-Fi protection on or off. You can also choose your security protocol and DNS settings from this tab.
Overall, the app is very easy to use and configure to your liking.
VyprVPN For iPhone and iPad Review
VyprVPN for iOS is one of the best VPNs that I have tested with my iPhone and iPad to date when it comes to customizable features. This is a top-notch VPN that is not only simple and easy to use but also highly customizable and feature-rich. While most other VPNs that I have tested on iOS are either simple or customizable, VyprVPN found a way to do both at the same time. Downloading and logging into your VyprVPN account is simple enough; once you log in and connect, you will be faced with this menu:
The “customize” tab allows you to choose between four different security protocols. This is a feature that I deeply appreciate, since most iOS VPN apps don’t allow you to change your security protocol. Not only does VyprVPN allow you to change your security protocol, but it also gives you a short and easily understandable description regarding the differences in each protocol.
Another feature that is good to have on VyprVPN’s iOS app is the ability to filter server locations by speed.
While I certainly find the feature-rich iOS app extremely satisfying, it’s all worthless if it slows your internet speeds too much. So, how does VyprVPN stand up to rigorous speed tests?
|Download Speed||Upload Speed|
|No VPN||38.91 Mbps||4.75 Mbps|
|With VyprVPN||12.05 Mbps||4.62 Mbps|
Most VPNs will reduce your internet speeds to some degree; this is because your traffic is being routed to another (sometimes far away) server location before it reaches its destination. While VyprVPN did slow down my download speed while using my iPhone and iPad, I didn’t notice that any of my videos were streaming slower.
Overall, I am extremely impressed with VyprVPN’s native iOS app. It is very user-friendly and feature-rich without sacrificing speed too much.
VyprVPN User Privacy
Most users will agree that privacy is an important motivating factor when it comes to choosing the right VPN for them. If you can’t trust a VPN to keep your activity private, then it’s not worth its weight in dirt. When it comes to user privacy, the things to look for are a concise no-logging policy and a company whose headquarters are outside the reach of international surveillance organizations, i.e., 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes. Companies headquartered in countries involved in these organizations may be able to force VPNs to track some user activity and report it to the government if requested.
Thankfully, VyprVPN has a clear and committed zero-logging policy that does not collect any VPN usage data. They may collect some basic information that you provide to them when signing up for an account on their website, such as your email address and payment information, but not much else.
VyprVPN is located in Switzerland, which is not a member of any surveillance alliance, and has ruled that IP addresses are personal information and does not require VyprVPN to collect any data on its users.
VyprVPN for Android Review
Setting up VyprVPN was a simple one-two. After downloading it onto my phone, I entered my account information, and the setup was complete. VyprVPN puts customizations, servers, and the connection tab on the bottom, making it easy to find necessary information. For account changes or troubleshooting, you can go through the side menu.
VyprVPN has several valuable features, including a kill switch, Connection Per App (VyprVPN’s split tunneling), protocols, and connection options. For the protocols, VyprVPN offers WireGuard, Chameleon, and OpenVPN.
VyprVPN’s overall app layout made searching for options simple and using a VPN less intimidating since each feature includes a short description explaining what they do.
My download speed was reduced by over 85% but the upload speed improved by 4%. Initially, Amazon Prime didn’t work with the server VyprVPN chose, but there were no issues with connection or lag after changing servers. However, I did lose more download speed, decreasing it down to 6.31 Mbps.
|Download Speed||Upload Speed|
|No VPN||287.76 Mbps||29.92 Mbps|
|With VyprVPN||45.43 Mbps||31.40 Mbps|
Servers are easy to find on the bottom menu and can be sorted by country, region, and speed. In addition, VyprVPN has a search bar and favorite list to make finding preferred servers effortless. This came in handy when I wanted to watch Fatherhood on Amazon Prime since I added the servers that I knew would work for streaming in my favorites list.
VyprVPN is best for those looking to safely use the internet without the worry of hackers or other malicious malware gaining personal information. While it did reduce my connection speed, I could still stream and browse without noticing a difference.
VyprVPN Streaming Test
As with any VPN service, you would expect VyprVPN to unblock geo-blocked content like Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and more. With state-of-the-art security protocols, VyprVPN doesn’t disappoint when it comes to streaming services. Unfortunately, as time goes on, streaming services are getting better at detecting VPNs and blocking traffic that comes from them. However, at the time this article was written, VyprVPN was able to unblock all major streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime Video.
|Netflix||U.S. and Australian Netflix|
Of course, your unique experience may differ depending on the security protocol that you choose as well as your start location and the VPN server that you’re connected to. If at first you don’t succeed, you can contact VyprVPN customer service or just experiment with the security protocols and server locations until you can access the streaming service you want.
VyprVPN Upload and Download Speed Tests
VyprVPN performed very well on the speed tests. While using most VPN services, you will experience a significant decrease in download speed; however, while using VyprVPN, we actually saw a 15 percent increase in download speed. The upload speed changed very insignificantly. The biggest change in speed was noticed in my latency, or ping, which increased by 720 percent.
|Download Speed Change||Upload Speed Change||Latency Increase|
Of course, your unique experience will vary depending on your starting speed, location, and proximity to one of VyprVPN’s servers as well as that server location’s speed.
Summing Up: Is VyprVPN for You?
VyprVPN is a top-tier VPN that performed well under scrutiny in every category, including price, security, privacy, usability, unblocking streaming services, and speed. This safely positions VyprVPN as one of the best VPNs on the market for a nearly unbeatable price if you choose the 36-month plan. Of course, we recommend that you never commit to a long-term plan without first trying out a VPN on the short term. So, try it out! It could be that VyprVPN is the right choice for you.
