What Is Community Internet Service?

Community Internet Service (CIS) is a small, local telecom company bringing affordable wireless internet to rural northwest Iowa families since its formation in 2003. Like other rural providers, CIS uses a fixed wireless network, which functions through a fiber-connected main access point that wirelessly transmits to individual receivers installed at nearby businesses, farms, and homes. Line of sight to the access point is important when it comes to the stability and speed of fixed wireless connections, which is why they work best in open, rural areas. CIS has top speeds that reach 25 Mbps, which isn’t terribly fast, but its plans are affordable.

CIS is available in northwest Iowa towns, including Rock Valley, Hull, Sioux Center, and Orange City, as well as the surrounding rural areas. It specializes in bringing connectivity to rural areas with few other reliable internet options. CIS also offers web-hosting services, and it’s currently working on bringing hot-spot services to customers so they can work and surf on mobile laptops.
