How do speed tests work?

Broadband Internet speed tests work by sending sample data to remote servers — just like when you send and receive data from website servers while using the Internet.

The resulting upload and download speed displayed here is determined by calculating the average upload and download speed of those test data packets or files.

What do my Test Results Mean?

  • Upload Speed: The rate at which your Internet connection can send data to a remote server over the Internet.
  • Download Speed: The rate at which your Internet connection can download data over the Internet
  • Latency: The amount of time, measured in milliseconds, that it takes a data packet to travel to a remote server and back. High Latency results in a “slow feeling” internet connection and laggy connections for video games and video chat.
  • Jitter: The degree to which latency varies over a number of tests

Why isn't my result always the same?

Results vary slightly across tests due to variations in network conditions.

Between the Wi-Fi in your home or office, the last mile network in your city, and the patchwork fiber networks of the Internet at large, there’s plenty of room for slight differences over time.

If you see a dramatically higher or lower result during different times of day, it’s likely that you are on a coaxial cable connection shared between multiple subscribers. This is why cable broadband often slows down during peak streaming times like 6–9pm.
