AT&T Internet vs Sonic: Extra Fees and Contracts

AT&T Internet offers both self and professional installation with prices varying depending on the plan and coverage provided.

Customers looking for a full, professional internet installation can have a technician set everything up for $99. With select bundled plans, this fee is waived. Those who choose to install the service themselves may do so with a lower-priced $35 activation fee. Additionally, AT&T does provide online support for self-installation.

Sonic’s DSL plan offers both self and professional installation by a technician. It’s absolutely free if customers opt to install the service themselves, but Sonic recommends professional installation which starts at $99. For fiber customers, installation is completely free.

Sonic currently offers contactless professional installation due to COVID-19.

Contracts, Equipment Fees & Fine Print

Most AT&T internet and bundled plans require a 1 to 2 year contract offering speeds up to 1,000 Mbps. Contract-free options are available, but contract-required plans offer the best monthly rates. Note that early termination fees cost up to $325, depending on how early one decides to break the agreement.

AT&T DSL internet plans no longer allow customers to buy their own equipment unless they’re a “Legacy” customer. Equipment rental fees for AT&T start at $10 a month, on top of the price of the monthly plan, and include everything needed to connect to the internet.

All Sonic services require a 12-month contract. Contract cancellations will incur an early termination fee of $149 or the remaining monthly charges.

Sonic DSL and cable customers may use their own equipment for service, but fiber customers are required to rent equipment evices from Sonic for $10-$22 a month. All customers who lease their equipment from Sonic, including DSL and cable customers, are automatically enrolled in Sonic’s Wire Plan for free. Benefits include remote diagnostic support and free service calls.

Data Caps

Most of AT&T’s plans come with 1 TB of data, which is often more than enough for most households. If more is needed, unlimited data can be purchased separately for an additional $30 a month, or if a TV and internet bundle is selected, unlimited internet data is included at no extra charge.

Every plan available from Sonic offers unlimited data. Plans are priced at $39.99 a month for fiber speeds up to 1,000 Mbps and $59.99 a month for DSL speeds up to 40 Mbps.
