AT&T Internet vs. Sonic Performance Overview
Sonic is the 8th largest DSL provider in the United States and provides service exclusively to the state of California with options for DSL, cable, and fiber. With fiber service made available to approximately 398,000 people—making it the 21st largest provider of fiber broadband in the nation—fiber availability depends on location and Sonic’s coverage range. All of Sonic’s internet plans are automatically bundled with phone service for no additional fee.
AT&T Internet is the 2nd largest DSL provider in the United States and provides service to 22 states with DSL, fiber, and fixed wireless. Its fiber service is available to approximately 25.1 million people, making it the 2nd largest provider of fiber broadband in the U.S. Additionally, they offer digital TV, digital landline phone service, and satellite TV packages, as well as bundled deals for AT&T Wireless customers.
AT&T Internet Installation
AT&T Internet offers both self and professional installation with prices varying depending on the plan and coverage provided.
Customers looking for a full, professional internet installation can have a technician set everything up for $99. With select bundled plans, this fee is waived. Those who choose to install the service themselves may do so with a lower-priced $35 activation fee. Additionally, AT&T does provide online support for self-installation.
Sonic’s DSL plan offers both self and professional installation by a technician. It’s absolutely free if customers opt to install the service themselves, but Sonic recommends professional installation which starts at $99. For fiber customers, installation is completely free.
Sonic currently offers contactless professional installation due to COVID-19.
AT&T Contracts, Equipment Fees & Fine Print
Most AT&T internet and bundled plans require a 1 to 2 year contract offering speeds up to 1,000 Mbps. Contract-free options are available, but contract-required plans offer the best monthly rates. Note that early termination fees cost up to $325, depending on how early one decides to break the agreement.
AT&T DSL internet plans no longer allow customers to buy their own equipment unless they’re a “Legacy” customer. Equipment rental fees for AT&T start at $10 a month, on top of the price of the monthly plan, and include everything needed to connect to the internet.
Sonic Contracts, Equipment Fees & Fine Print
All Sonic services require a 12-month contract. Contract cancellations will incur an early termination fee of $149 or the remaining monthly charges.
Sonic DSL and cable customers may use their own equipment for service, but fiber customers are required to rent equipment evices from Sonic for $10-$22 a month. All customers who lease their equipment from Sonic, including DSL and cable customers, are automatically enrolled in Sonic’s Wire Plan for free. Benefits include remote diagnostic support and free service calls.
AT&T Internet Data Caps
Most of AT&T’s plans come with 1 TB of data, which is often more than enough for most households. If more is needed, unlimited data can be purchased separately for an additional $30 a month, or if a TV and internet bundle is selected, unlimited internet data is included at no extra charge.
Sonic Data Caps
Every plan available from Sonic offers unlimited data. Plans are priced at $39.99 a month for fiber speeds up to 1,000 Mbps and $59.99 a month for DSL speeds up to 40 Mbps.
Fantastic team and great coverage
Absolutely fantastic! Tech came out to help install and, due to the wiring in our apt, it took a while to find the correct outlets. But he was so patient and helpful and kind, really going above and beyond to make sure things got set up so I could have the level of coverage needed to qualify for work from home. Truly amazing guy, I honestly can't speak highly enough of him. He kept trying long after I suspect most would have given up. Huge THANK YOU to AT&T for the coverage at the right price (literally half the price of the competitor in this area), and more importantly for having such an amazing guy on your team. Thank you.
I travel often and I definitely travel around upstate New York and everywhere I go AT&T is faster and even seems to have more coverage than the others, so I am not sure who is doing the tests, but everywhere I have been, AT&T seems to outperform (also I don’t like AT&T as a company, so trust my honest review here).
Fiber service is great!
I've been a Sonic customer for many years for their customer service alone. On the rare occasions I call, I get to immediately talk to a smart person who can fix things. That alone made me a loyal customer. Earlier this year they upgraded me to their gigabit service. My price actually went down, and now I have 1000 Mbps service both up and down. It's been fast and reliable, and I heartily recommend them.
Top-notch speed at 1Gbps up & down with no cap! It outright beats the others that I used to subscribe to. I have it for over 4 1/2 years in my neighborhood now. Lovin' it!
