Frontier vs. Windstream Performance Overview
As the fifth-largest DSL provider in the U.S., Frontier Communications offers widespread DSL and copper coverage across 29 states. Frontier’s fiber plans—FiberOptic—are only available in select areas. Along with a variety of internet plans, Frontier offers a wide range of bundle options with TV and phone services for residential and businesses.
Following closely behind, Windstream is the sixth-largest DSL provider servicing 13.7 million people and offering cable, copper, and fixed wireless to all states in the U.S. Like Frontier, Windstream’s fiber plans—Kinetic—are only available in select regions and provide a range of speeds and prices that vary depending on the location. Windstream also provides TV and phone services, which may be a great deal if bundled with internet service.
Depending on the type of internet, Frontier customers are offered two installation options: self-installation and professional installation.
If you are eligible, you can opt for self-installation with no fee. Frontier’s professional installation is a one-time charge of $75.
With Windstream, self-installation is free of charge and includes modem shipment, installation instructions, and technical support over the phone.
You can also opt for Windstream’s professional installation for a one-time fee of $35, which is relatively inexpensive.
Frontier Contracts, Equipment Fees & Fine Print
No annual contracts are required with Frontier’s Fio, high-speed plans, or bundles, which means you can cancel your service at any time without contract obligation or penalties.
However, if you do sign a contract for a stellar promotional rate, be prepared to pay early termination fees up to $400 if you terminate your contract before it ends. Regarding equipment, Frontier offers an option to rent a modem and router for $10/month or purchase the equipment for a one-time fee of $200.
Windstream Contracts, Equipment Fees & Fine Print
Windstream offers contract-free options with all internet plans.
Their contracted plans offer financial bargains such as three complimentary months or a year-long promotional rate. Although their internet plans can be canceled at any time, Windstream’s Dish TV service requires a contract, with early termination fees up to $480 if the agreement is terminated early. Windstream’s fee to rent a modem range anywhere between $9.99-11.99/month.
Frontier Data Caps
There are no data cap restrictions with Frontier Communications, which means you have access to unlimited data.
Windstream Data Caps
Like Frontier, Windstream does not have any data cap restrictions with their internet-only plans and bundles.
FiberOptic is top notch
Installer was very knowledgeable about how networks work and quickly patched in my line where I needed it. 6 months in and I saw an ad for 500/500 for the same price I had been paying for 200/200. A quick chat with sales and I upgraded for free. Highly recommend Frontier FiberOptic service.
Going the extra mile
During the winter storm in Texas that caused the entire state to lose power, I also found that the constant cycling of power caused the ONT (fiber optics converter) for my house to break. At least this is what the technician said. Anyway, I did the troubleshooting over the phone and they identified the problem. But then a ticket had to be opened and I was in the queue with lots of others. Unfortunately, my original ticket was closed by their system because it was associated with the widespread outage. I called when my ticket was closed and they opened a new one a week later. Although somewhat frustrated because I work from home I have to say the Frontier tried to get a technician out to fix my problem almost every day but I was then away from the house. I just want to say that they didn't forget me and really tried to solve my problem. They called me daily but I was away for a wedding. Great job Frontier. Your internet service is great too and it's why I've been a customer for a very long time.
Speed is so much better now!
5 years ago, we struggled with connecting to the internet with Windstream. 3 years ago, Windstream ran fiber to Mount Vernon and upgraded to bonded DSL and we immediately jumped to 25Mbps. They are now running fiber closer to our home which will result in speeds jumping to 50Mbps.
Ok for email, and Streaming video, not any good for Steam server loses signal.
Have had Windstream for years. Ok for email and works most of the time on video streaming. Only have dual DSL. Works for streaming sometimes then crashes steam server connection. Upload is very slow, like 1.4mbps. It will download at 20mbps max.
