CyberGhost VPN Overview

There are many VPN providers on the market today. When looking for a VPN provider, you want to be sure it will cover all your networking needs, including being compatible with all your devices. VPNs are all the same more or less, but each provider such as ProtonVPN, Hide My Ass and IPVanish has a few characteristics setting them apart from the rest. For CyberGhost, it is their wide-reaching network and longer-than-normal trial period.

For an in-depth look at how CyberGhost performs or how easy it is to use, read our hands-on review on CyberGhost’s VPN. Here, we cover the basics to get you familiar with who CyberGhost is and what they offer.

Best Features

A few of CyberGhost’s standout features are their availability, with over 6,500 servers, and their 45-day money-back guarantee policy. While the number of servers is important, how spread out they are weighs heavier on your internet performance. Your distance from the server affects internet speed. CyberGhost’s servers are situated across more than 20 additional countries than well-known VPNs such as NordVPN. You can also look forward to the following features CyberGhost offers with each subscription:

  • Strict no-logs policy — CyberGhost does not, nor are they required to, keep logs of your browsing history or any identifiable information.
  • Dedicated streaming servers — Out of the 6,500 servers CyberGhost offers, a portion is dedicated to optimizing the streaming experience on certain platforms. For instance, you can choose a server dedicated to securing your privacy while enhancing your connection to services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and more.
  • 45-day money-back guarantee — CyberGhost offers the longest “free trial” in the VPN space. Technically, their free trial is a money-back guarantee. However, it works the same as a free trial, allowing you to try CyberGhost without committing.
  • More device support — Most VPNs limit the number of devices supported simultaneously to five. CyberGhost supports seven devices at a time, with compatibility ranging from smartphones and computers to gaming consoles and routers.
  • 24/7 live customer support — Although CyberGhost’s technical support is only available via live chat or email, having 24/7 access to support is essential for new VPN users and businesses.
  • Automatic kill switch — Your IP address can get exposed if you lose connection to your VPN. CyberGhost integrates an automatic kill switch which will immediately stop your internet connection the moment connection is lost to a VPN.

How Does CyberGhost VPN Work?

When you surf the web, your ISP gives you a specific address, an internet protocol (IP) address meant to identify a network and where data is coming and going. This address can be seen and tracked by any site you visit. When you use CyberGhost, your internet traffic funnels through their VPN, showing CyberGhost’s IP address instead of yours.

CyberGhost also works with streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube on a wide variety of devices. With the anonymity of VPN services, you get beyond geo-restrictions and are able to watch programming that would sometimes be blocked to a local area. This can include movies and even sporting events that would have blackouts to areas within a region.

Is CyberGhost VPN Safe to Use?

It’s common to ask whether you’re safe using CyberGhost or if they save your data. One area CyberGhost prides itself on is its primary headquarters server location, which is in Romania. The location of a VPN provider’s headquarters is a major factor for privacy reasons. Romania is one of the countries where they are not required to abide by retention laws. They do not keep records of internet browsing data as companies are legally obligated to do in the U.S.

CyberGhost’s Romanian headquarters will not slow down your internet speed. The majority of CyberGhost’s servers are in the U.S., with nearly 1,200 servers across 11 cities. Germany, Canada, and the U.K. follow behind in server count, along with more than 80 countries. CyberGhost VPN Subscription and Pricing

CyberGhost VPN plan pricing functions much like internet plans do — they are priced monthly. However, you can purchase longer-term contracts, often for a dramatically lower price. There is nearly a $10 difference in CyberGhost’s monthly price between their per-month plan compared to their three-year plan. Long-term contracts are not always worth the price, but CyberGhost offers four plans with a one-to three-year year commitment length to no contract at all.

Term Monthly Price Annual Price
3 years $2.25 $87.75 every 3 years
2 years $3.49 $83.76 every 2 years
1 year $3.99 $47.88 per year
1 month $12.99 $12.99 per month

CyberGhost’s three-year plan is one of the longest contracts on the market. The question you have to ask is, do you want to have that long of a contract? Compared to other VPN providers, like NordVPN and ExpressVPN, CyberGhost’s three-year plan offers the lowest monthly rate — Surf Shark comes in close second at $2.49 per month for two years.

CyberGhost VPN Deals in 2021

Currently, CyberGhost’s three-year plan includes three additional months free. However, be mindful of the costs to end the contract — CyberGhost will charge you the full amount of the remaining months on your contract if you cancel outside of the 45-day money-back guarantee window.

CyberGhost’s best deals are in the features themselves. For instance, most VPN providers limit the number of devices supported simultaneously to five or six — CyberGhost supports up to seven devices at a time. Although CyberGhost offers protection for all devices using its network, Windows users can get an extra level of protection with CyberGhost’s Privacy Suite for Windows.

From time to time, CyberGhost will promote a Refer a Friend program on its site. They also offer users the opportunity to promote the site for compensation.

CyberGhost VPN Free Trial

CyberGhost offers some of the longest free trials in the VPN space— 14 days for the monthly service and 45 days for the longer contracts. These trials have no limitations or restrictions. You’ll have full access to all the features CyberGhost offers, including the free antivirus and privacy guard software for Windows. If you are unhappy with their service, you simply cancel and walk away.

It is important to note that the only way to receive the trial is through the CyberGhost website. Obtaining CyberGhost through a partner may not give you the trial period option unless it is explicitly stated.

How to Cancel CyberGhost VPN

If you are within the trial period, it is easy to cancel a CyberGhost VPN subscription. They have detailed instructions on how to do so based on where you purchased your subscription. If you subscribed through the CyberGhost website, you can cancel your subscription by accessing your Account Dashboard, going to My Subscriptions, then turning off Auto-Renewal. You’ll still be able to use the service until your contract ends.

Canceling your subscription only keeps you from renewing your contract. To get a refund, you must be within the money-back guarantee grace period and contact CyberGhost’s customer service via online chat, an online response form, or email.

Is CyberGhost VPN Any Good?

Founded in 2011, CyberGhost builds its reputation on the performance and security of its network. The biggest advantage of using CyberGhost over the competition is their price, especially if you are in it for the long haul. However, if you are looking for a VPN provider that can fit your budget without requiring such a long contract, check out the VPN providers we recommend in this year’s Best VPNs review.
