If you’re interested in satellite internet for your home, Starlink by SpaceX is likely at the top of your list of providers. Starlink pricing varies by location, meaning two households just a few miles apart (or even across county lines) might pay drastically different amounts for the exact same level of service.
Depending on your local network capacity, your Starlink cost can range from discounted monthly rates in underutilized areas to extra upfront fees in heavily congested regions. SpaceX also offers flexible hardware arrangements, tiered speeds, and regional incentives that directly impact your Starlink monthly cost and upfront cost. If you are asking, “How much is Starlink in my area?” this guide breaks down what you can expect to see on your bill.
What’s the Average Cost of Starlink?
Starlink residential plans cost between $55 and $130 per month, with zero upfront equipment costs aside from a shipping fee of $20.
Check Starlink Prices at Your Address
Because SpaceX adjusts service pricing and availability based on real-time density and satellite capacity, you cannot rely on blanket nationwide numbers alone. The only way to know your exact rate is to check Starlink prices at your address.
How to Look Up Your Local Rate
- Navigate to Starlink’s official address lookup: Visit Starlink’s main site and enter your specific street address or 5-digit ZIP code.
- Review available service tiers: The order screen will immediately display which Starlink plans in my area are currently available for immediate activation, versus those on a waitlist or subject to dynamic pricing.
- Verify upfront fees and discounts: Look closely at the hardware checkout line. If your area qualifies for a regional discount or hardware sale, it will automatically apply here. Conversely, if your area is at capacity, any Starlink demand surcharge or congestion fee will appear before final payment.
Why Starlink Price by Location Varies
To understand your localized invoice, it helps to look at how Starlink’s satellite constellation functions. Unlike traditional geostationary (GEO) satellites from providers like Hughesnet or Viasat (which hover in a fixed orbit 22,000 miles above the equator), Starlink operates thousands of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites roughly 340 miles overhead.
SpaceX divides the globe into hexagonal service areas. Each area has a finite amount of bandwidth from the satellites passing overhead at any given minute.
Excess Capacity (Regional Discounts)
In regions where satellite bandwidth outpaces subscription demand, such as select rural areas in the Midwest, Northern states, or parts of Western Canada, SpaceX introduces Starlink regional discounts. In these areas, customers may receive an equipment discount or account credits, resulting in average savings of $100 to $200.
Congested Areas (Demand Surcharges)
In regions with a high concentration of active dishes (frequently seen across parts of the Southeast, Texas, and suburban fringe zones), satellites experience heavy traffic during peak evening hours. To curb rapid subscriber growth in overcrowded areas without degrading overall performance, SpaceX applies Starlink congestion and demand surcharges. These location-based fees vary with area density and can range from a one-time fee between $100 and $1,500.

Starlink Equipment Purchase vs. Rental Options
When signing up for service, you must choose how to obtain your dish and Wi-Fi router. Deciding whether to purchase or rent Starlink equipment is one of the most significant factors in determining your immediate out-of-pocket setup fee.
Option A: Outright Hardware Purchase
- Standard kit: $349
- Starlink Mini Kit: $199–$349
- Flat High-Performance Kit: $1,999
Buying your gear outright requires a larger upfront cash investment, but it’s no longer required for new residential customers. Starlink now offers equipment for free. If you choose to buy your equipment to own it, there are no monthly equipment fees on your account, and the kit pays for itself over longer subscription periods (typically within 24 to 30 months, compared to rental rates).
Option B: Monthly Equipment Rental
- Rental fee: $0–$10 (free rental available in select regions)
- Upfront hardware fee: $0 (must pay a $20 shipping fee)
SpaceX has expanded free equipment rental options across select markets. If you want to avoid paying hundreds of dollars upfront, leasing the dish lets you get connected at a fraction of the upfront cost. If you cancel service, you simply pack up the dish and return it to SpaceX.
Starlink Installation, Shipping, and Accessory Costs
Unlike traditional broadband providers that send a service technician to run coaxial or fiber cabling into your living room, Starlink is built primarily as a self-install system. That said, total deployment costs often include additional components depending on your roofline and home structure.
Shipping and Handling
SpaceX charges a standard flat-rate shipping fee (typically $20 inside the continental U.S.) to deliver the starter kit directly to your doorstep.
Self-Installation (DIY)
The standard Starlink kit comes with everything required for basic ground or tabletop placement:
- Starlink dish
- Wi-Fi router
- Power and connection cables
If you have an unobstructed yard or deck with a clear view of the northern sky, your Starlink installation cost could literally be $0.
Professional Installation
If your property is surrounded by dense tree canopies or tall structures, or requires a permanent roof or chimney mount, self-installation may not be feasible.
- Third-party contractor fees: Hiring a local audiovisual, satellite, or handyman technician to mount the dish, run external cabling through exterior walls, and seal entry points typically costs between $150 and $300.
- Estimated Starlink professional installation cost: $150–$300 total for labor, excluding the price of specialty mounting brackets.
Essential Mounting Accessories and Add-Ons
SpaceX sells proprietary mounts and accessories through the official Starlink shop. Because standard hardware does not fit traditional satellite pole diameters without adapters, factor these common items into your budget:
| Accessory | Average price | Primary function |
|---|---|---|
| Pivot mount / wall mount | $60–$85 | Secures the dish to fascia boards, exterior walls, or roof overhangs. |
| Pipe adapter | $40–$50 | Adapts Starlink dish stems to fit existing J-mount poles from old satellite setups. |
| Ethernet adapter | $25–$45 | Provides a wired RJ45 port to connect third-party routers or network switches. |
| Extended cable (150 ft) | $70–$90 | Replaces the standard-length cable for long runs from the roof to the indoor router. |
| Starlink mesh Wi-Fi node | $120 | Expands wireless coverage across larger homes or outbuildings. |
How Starlink Costs Compare to Other Rural Internet Options
While Starlink delivers impressive speeds (100–400 Mbps) and exceptionally low latency (30–40 ms) compared to older satellite technology, it’s rarely the cheapest option on the market. Here is how its overall value compares with that of alternative rural broadband providers, including fellow satellite providers and 5G internet options.
Starlink vs. Traditional GEO Satellite (Hughesnet & Viasat)
- Hughesnet: Offers lower entry plan prices ($40–$50/mo), but comes with strict data caps, higher latency, and slower download speeds (25–50 Mbps).
- Viasat: Monthly plans range from $40 to $100, but equipment rental fees and high latency make real-time gaming or video conferencing challenging compared to Starlink.
- Winner: Starlink provides superior speed, responsiveness, and unlimited usage, making its higher upfront fee worthwhile for heavy internet users.
Starlink vs. 5G Home Internet (T-Mobile & Verizon)
- T-Mobile and Verizon 5G: Costs between $50 and $80/month with zero upfront hardware fees, simple plug-and-play installation, and unlimited data.
- Winner: If you have a solid signal at your property, 5G home internet is significantly cheaper than Starlink. However, if cellular reception is weak or non-existent, Starlink remains the definitive top choice.
