Internet Access in Mount Airy, Maryland

Mount Airy offers 9 residential Internet providers, or 15 when including business and mobile operators. Consumers have access to 7 choices for wired Internet such as cable and DSL.

The plans listed here are collected by hand through our data analysis team. The 38 Internet packages displayed above are the most current out of 345 packages we've aggregated in Mount Airy to date.

There is above-average choice between Internet providers around the Mount Airy area, but 5,000 residents can't get access to more than one provider. If these subscribers aren't satisfied with the quality of service, they are left with no option but to use a lower-grade wireless. However, this isn't the norm in Mount Airy. The majority of households have 3 choices for broadband-grade Internet service.

Coverage from Viasat Internet and HughesNet, generally, will overlap. As a result, the decision between Viasat and HughesNet is common in Mount Airy.

To summarize, Mount Airy's Internet infrastructure conforms with a common pattern in Maryland cities: strong coverage of bundled cable and DSL service, with the caveat that most residences are stuck with a single company for subscribing to either service. The cable/DSL pattern is normal because Internet providers were started pre-Internet as cable TV and landline telephone corporations, and use these pre-existing networks to deliver Internet services.

Internet Statistics 2022

5,000 People Only have access to 1 or fewer wired internet providers available at their address.

This data is calculated from FCC datasets which providers are legally required to supply twice a year. We further validate this data for accuracy.

Mount Airy is the 281st most connected city in Maryland ahead of New Market, but behind Woodbine, Damascus, Ijamsville, and Monrovia.

The “Connected” metric is a citywide average based on FCC data showing the density of broadband options at the census block level.

Approximately 7,000 people in Frederick County don't have access to any wired internet.

This statistic is drawn from the population in census blocks not served by at least one wired broadband provider.

Fiber Availability: 9% of people living in Mount Airy have residential fiber service available to them.

Fiber coverage data is sourced from FCC Form 477 filings and cross-validated through BroadbandNow with private datasets and direct provider reporting.

Approximately 81% of Mount Airy residents are serviced by multiple wired providers.

This coverage statistic is based on a mix of FCC and private provider reporting in the past two quarters.

In Frederick County, approximately 11,000 people do not have access to 25 Mbps wired broadband.

25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload is the minimum speed for an Internet connection to be classified as “Broadband” by the FCC.

Data Caps in Mount Airy

Data collected by our researchers shows that top providers place some sort of limit on data use for their home broadband connections. Data caps are a public issue since customers see them as a tactic to discourage "cord cutting". Providers insist that caps are a necessary tool for managing heavy network congestion. Either way, the culprit is the same: streaming video, which can use one to seven Gigabytes/hr.

Customer Reviews of Internet Providers in Mount Airy

Very limited technology

I have a 3800 sq ft home and the router that comes with the service, which you have to use, does not create a signal strong enough to get to the rear of my home. Adding a range extender is not supported so if you use one, they will claim that it's why your internet speed isn't what it is supposed to be. I removed the extender and barely got above 2-5Mbps even after rep tells me I am pulling 9Mbps from their end. I upgraded to the top tier plan for a test and still barely pushed past 6-7 Mbps when they claim 25 Mbps. The sad fact is for the money, it is the best you are going to get without a contract in my area.
