If you’re shopping for new internet service in Houston, chances are you have the option to choose between AT&T or Xfinity from Comcast. Both companies serve nearly 95 percent of Houston, and are the best choices for fast, reliable internet for most residents.
Fastest Internet Providers in Houston
AT&T internet service comes in two flavors: ultra-fast fiber internet, with download and upload speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (also known as gigabit speed), and IPBB internet, with speeds up to 100 Mbps. AT&T is still building out its fiber network and is available to just over half of Houston residents. We recommend you call AT&T to see if fiber is available.
Xfinity from Comcast also has high-speed cable internet service. Download speeds for Comcast are up to a blazing 1,200 Mbps, although maximum upload speeds are limited to 30 Mbps.
If neither of these options are preferred, Earthlink Internet is available to many Houston residents. Earthlink Internet uses AT&T’s reliable fiber and DSL networks, with its own prices and dedicated customer support and service from Earthlink.
In addition to the big three, there are 20 internet service providers serving a smaller number of Houston residents (5 percent or less of the city). Enter your Houston ZIP code at the top of this page to see which ones may be available.
Cheapest Internet in Houston
If you’re looking for an internet-only plan, AT&T has high-speed fiber plans (300 Mbps to 940 Mbps download speed) with promotional pricing between $55 and $80 per month, and lower-speed DSL plans (100 Mbps and slower) at $55 per month.
Xfinity’s high-speed internet-only plans are comparably priced, from $60 to $80 per month for higher-speed cable plans (400 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps download speeds) and lower-speed plans between $30-$35 per month.
Comparing AT&T and Xfinity
Many consumers ultimately choose between AT&T and Xfinity based on the TV, phone or entertainment bundles that are packaged with the internet. AT&T customers can bundle DIRECTV (starting at $120) or AT&T TV. Discounts are also available to AT&T Wireless customers.
Xfinity can be bundled with its cable TV service and/or phone service, which can typically add $50 or more to your monthly bill, depending on the bundle you choose.
